about

Cover is The Redeemer by Hildegard von Bingen from Scivias 2.1

These compositions of sacred polyphony (and monophony in the case of Hildegard von Bingen) are presented here with instrumentation that is not concerned with authentic historical representation. Rather the sounds here are intentionally elaborate, campy, artificial, and, at times, joyful. This music was composed at a time when events like the Reformation and the Renaissance were challenging musical and societal ideas constantly. Certain harmonies and intervals that were not allowed by the Catholic Church began to come into use. New compositional forms and methods were developed and elaborated upon, and by the 17th century the beginnings of a more Baroque form of music appeared (see Claudio Monteverdi’s Magnifcat Secondo). However, primarily the pieces presented here are examples of Renaissance polyphony from the 16th century. Most of the pieces are motets, psalms, madrigals, or vocal compositions written as acts of praising God. Acknowledging that, there are also a few examples of music here that focus on non-liturgical themes such as Josquin des Prez’s Nymphes des Bois, which was written to commemorate the passing on the composer's teacher Johannes Ockeghem. I encourage you to put these compositions any time you want to curl up on the couch, reflect on the day, or just have something nice on in the background. I find the compositions here to be very nourishing and I hope you have a similar experience.
